Ambient light sensors are rapidly replacing cadmium based photo resistors, in part due to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances legislation in Europe. While the United States has not yet enacted similar legislation, it is likely that ambient light sensors will quickly replace all photo resistors. Any lighting control application that is a function of ambient light is a target. Battery powered consumer electronics devices are implementing power savings strategies. One clear way to reduce power consumption is to enable automatic turn-on and turn-off, or brightness control, of LCD backlights based on ambient light. Any device with an LCD or backlit keypad is a target. The TEMT6200FX01 is an 0805 surface mount device utilizing Vishay’s patent-pending filter formula that virtually eliminates the effect of infrared light. It is qualified for automotive applications. The TEPT5700 is offered in a 5mm flat-top package with an angle of half sensitivity of ± 50°. The TEPT4400 is offered in a 3mm package with a ± 30° angle of half sensitivity The TEMT6000X01 is a surface-mount 1206 package and is also qualified for automotive applications The TEPT5600 is narrow angle 5-mm device with viewing angle of ± 20°.
