Serial Attached SCSI SFF 8482 has the same form factor as Serial ATA with the addition of a "bump" to key it specifically for SAS. Also called SAS Backplane Connector. (Serial ATA drives can be plugged into SAS controllers, but SAS drives will not function with a Serial ATA controller; hence, the necessity for the key bump on the connector.)
The capabilities of Serial Attach SCSI have been developed to meet the evolving needs of high end server applications. These challenging needs include scalability, performance, reliability and manageability, while leveraging a common electrical and physical connection interface with Serial ATA. This compatibility provides users with unprecedented choices for server and sub-system deployment.
Serial Attach SCSI uses a point-to-point architecture which works in conjunction with PCI Express and other high-speed architectures on the market such as Serial ATA. Both Serial Attach SCSI and Serial ATA drives are compatible with Serial Attach SCSI Backplane receptacles. Molex offers a wide range of PCB attachment and size options for any application.
