This presentation demonstrates how to significantly improve the performance of legacy 2mm hard metric backplanes (cPCI, VME64x, VITA31) up to 5Gb/s without expensive backplane redesign. You will be introduced to 3M MetPak High Speed Hard Metric (or HSHM) connectors that provide a cost-effective solution for reaching higher speed performance. This allows equipment vendors to leverage their current PCB designs and extend their product offering by taking advantage of new faster bus architectures.

In this presentation, Lindsay Powell of the 3M Company, will provide an overview of input/output (I/O) connectors. Powell will explain what to look for in an I/O connector and what to consider when selecting an I/O connector for your application. He will also share 3M's product portfolio in this connector category, including D-Sub, D Ribbon, MDR, LVDS, Camera Link®, SDR, SCR, and miniSAS.

Power applications place specific demands for life, ESR and ripple current on the electrolytic capacitors. These factors are interrelated and dependent on the capacitor design and construction. The different factors are discussed to help the designer become more aware of what to look for when specifying power electrolytic capacitors.

Any time design engineers talk about low inductance capacitors, it is usually assumed that the only type of low inductance capacitors is MLCC, but this is no longer the case. By changing the package configuration of the SMD conductive-polymer capacitor, inductances lowered by 75% are available today and inductances approaching 100pH will soon be available. Because this component is by its physical structure a lossy component, achieving impedances below 5 milliohms extends through a significant frequency range unlike the very low sharp and narrow impedance responses of the ceramic capacitors. Tune in to TTI’s QuikCast with John Prymak of KEMET to learn more about FDO capacitors.

The dominating cause for failures in MLCCs is “flex cracks” leading to circuit failures. These failures may appear as nonfunctional circuits in the more benign cases, but as dead-shorts in catastrophic cases. KEMET has been working with our customers in order to alleviate this failure, and by developing designs to improve the capacitor’s capability of surviving this failure. There are now three products being offered by KEMET to address this failure from solutions to eliminate the short-circuit capability, to improving the capability of the capacitors to handle the forces created with this failure. Learn more about KEMET’s flex mitigation portfolio in TTI’s QuikCast – information that’s fast, easy, and free.

Listen in as Mike Henderson discusses the Molex iPass Interconnect System. iPass is the trade name for a versatile high-speed, high-bandwidth connector system. Its capabilities have enabled it to be adopted by several industry standards already, but it is the intent of Molex to expand its use into other applications.

This presentation is a brief, but detailed introduction to an exciting new product offering from Phoenix Contact. The QC (Quick Connect) 1.5 represents the next generation in I/O and low power terminations to the PCB. This new insulation displacement plug provides greater flexibility in wire selections compared to other IDC products currently available in the market. Fast termination of discrete, stranded wires provides a labor saving advantage during installation. A common screwdriver is all that is required to make a positive gas-tight connection.
