Automotive Relays and Modules
Automotive relays and modules
are optimized for use in motor vehicles (lower voltage DC loads). Modules package one or more relays with other circuitry. Panel mount, plug-in, and PC board versions of these products are offered. Electric wheelchairs and battery powered
material handling equipment are among other applications for these products. These relays typically do not carry marks from agencies such as UL, CSA, VDE, etc.
General Purpose Relays
General purpose relays
are typically rated to carry maximum currents from five to 20A in a variety of commercial and industrial applications. With one to eight poles, they were originally designed to be plugged into a socket or mounted to a panel, but some also offer PC terminals as an option. Both open and enclosed models are included, and there are many contact and enclosure options. Some offer indicators and mechanical test buttons as options.
Low Signal Relays
These hermetically sealed low signal relays
, rated 5A or less, are designed for applications in demanding conditions (extremes of temperature, shock, vibration, etc.). They offer from one to six poles, and some can switch up to 6GHz. Enclosures range from TO-5 and 0.100

Most reed relays have higher coil resistances and provide faster switching speeds than standard relays.

Solid State Relays
The hermetically sealed or encapsulated solid state relays
are designed for application in demanding conditions (extremes of temperature, shock, vibration, etc.). Solid state relays perform their switching function with solid state components. They offer one, two, or four outputs and can switch up to 125A. Some incorporate circuit protection or other logic functions in addition to their switching capability. PC board and panel mount types are included. Models meeting military and aerospace specifications are available.

are designed for application in demanding conditions (extremes of temperature, shock, vibration, etc.). They combine an internal timer, fixed or adjustable, with either an electromechanical or solid state output relay and contacts rated up to 10A. Models meeting military and aerospace specifications are available. PC board and panel mount types are included. Many of these products are custom designed to meet a customer’s specific requirements.
Things to Consider
Characteristics of relays should be understood when choosing a relay. Some important relay specifications include
the load types, coil options, contacts and arrangements, relay housings, and mountings.
Load types are the maximum permissible voltage and the maximum permissable amperage the relay can handle,
both volts and amps. Both the size of the load and its type are important. There are four types of loads: Resistive load, Inductive load, AC or DC, and High or Low Inrush.
Characteristics of coils should be understood as a part of the relay chosen. Some important specifications include: Coil Characteristics, Pick-Up Voltage, Drop-Out Voltage, Maximum Continuous Voltage, Nominal Operating Current, Nominal Operating Power and Coil Resistance.
- The contacts are the most important constituent of a relay. Their characteristics are significantly affected by
factors such as the material of the contacts, voltage, and current values applied to them (especially the voltage
and current waveforms when energizing and de-energizing the contacts), the type of load, operating frequency,
- Contact Arrangement denotes contact switching combinations available on a relay and are defined in terms of
number of pole, number of throws, normal position, and the sequence to make or break.
- Relays can be sealed in a number of ways, such as: Plastic Housing, Semi-sealed, Fully Sealed, Hermetically Sealed, and Unsealed.
- There are several typical ways for relays to be mounted and terminated: Socket, PCB or Chassis.
