Current Sensors

Available in open loop (simple, cost effective, compact, low consumption) or closed loop (good linearity and accuracy, fast response time, good EMC performance), current sensors measure a current using magnetic sensors based on the magnetic flux created by the passing current. Honeywell current sensors are built to minimize drift, offering better performance and extending product life.

Applications include variable speed drives (VSD) such as spinning and paper making, oil/chemical and building construction; alternative energy such as residential solar energy, solar energy stations and wind energy; servo motors such as machine tools, robotics, factory automation, automatic assembly lines and printing; and power supply such as telecommunications, electricity distribution, military, broadcasting and railways.

Position Sensors

Honeywell’s non-contact position sensors offer greater life, less wear and tear and unmatchable accuracy. The SMART MR technology line offers linear, arc and rotary sensing products to meet the needs of many industries, construction and agriculture being two great examples.

Honeywell’s arc position sensor allows reliable angle positioning for boom control and performance, cutter head positioning and more. A linear position sensor ensures the correct positioning of outriggers for safe vehicle stabilization while lifting, as well as attachment recognition on large machinery. And the rotary position sensor offers effective steering angle sensing on paver trucks, tilt/trim positioning, position/movement detection, and suspension displacement.

Speed Sensors

Honeywell’s non-contacting speed sensors detect the spinning movement of a mechanical shaft, gear or similar mechanism, packaged within a protective housing that can be mounted directly into a customer’s application. Since every need is different, Honeywell’s speed sensor line is designed so that customization can be done without the customized price or development delays.

Common uses include the sensing of engine cam and crank speeds, transmission speeds, wheel speeds, electric motor speed, and hydraulic pump speed. Hall-Effect and Variable Reluctance (VR) are the two main technologies used by Honeywell in its speed sensing line of products.

Construction equipment utilizes a wide range of speed sensors from engine, mechanical power and body control, to chassis and transmission control. Honeywell can provide precise, durable packaging applications.

Magnetic Sensors Offer Immunity, Efficiency, and So Much More


Honeywell’s Magnetic Sensor portfolio is broad and effective for countless applications including motors, brushless DC motors, fans, RPM sensing and flow control in segments such as Industrial, HVAC, Medical, and Appliances. Magnetic technology is ideal for position sensing because it is immune to dust, dirt, mud and water, and its non-contact sensing provides longer-lasting performance and durability for switches without the wear and tear of mechanical switches. These are all the key reasons why magnetic technology is used throughout Honeywell’s sensor product line as the core sensing element.

Honeywell utilizes four magnetic sensing types in its sensors: unipolar, omnipolar, analog/linear, and bipolar/bipolar latch. Unipolar sensors require only one pole (either the north or south pole -- but not both) to operate and release the sensor and are used to sense the absence or presence of a target. Omnipolar sensors also require only one pole to operate and release the sensor. It will turn on from either the north or south pole, and eliminates identifying the pole of the magnet, helping to reduce costs and time.

Analog/linear sensors measure how close the target is to the sensor, with output being proportional to the magnetic field strength. These sensors operate with both north and south poles. Linear sensors are used in applications such as current, angular, and proximity sensing, as well as throttles and liquid levels.

Bipolar and latching sensors require two poles: one pole to turn ‘on’ and the opposite pole to turn ‘off.’ Honeywell latching Hall-effect sensors are bipolar sensors that have been tested to indicate the latch point. Commonly used in motors of all types, bipolar latch sensors provide the ability to reverse the motor and offer a higher response time in switching due to extreme Gauss sensitivity. In most cases, a five percent efficiency improvement is seen over similar sensors. This high sensitivity allows for a smaller magnet, reducing the overall sensor cost. Honeywell’s Hall-effect sensors also provide high temperature stability, which improves overall robustness and repeatability of the application.

Honeywell also has magnetic-based sensing products for use where power is a constraint. For example, lower power sensors that run off batteries are available.
